Rebecca Sassouni moved to Great Neck in 1994. She and her husband are raising their four children, including two graduates of Great Neck North High School, to be part of the fabric that weaves together the extraordinary Great Neck community. Rebecca was born in the United States in 1970, the first- born child of immigrants from Iran. She is a product of public schools in Queens, Manhattan, and Roslyn, New York; a cum laude graduate, with Distinction, of Barnard College, Columbia University; a graduate of the Hofstra University School of Law, and a former Associate Editor of the Hofstra Law Review.
Rebecca has long been involved in the Great Neck Public Schools, currently serving as one of three parent members on the Board of Education’s Citizens’ Advisory Committee. Sassouni is also an officer of United Parent Teacher Council (UPTC), the umbrella parent teacher organization across the school district; the Chairperson of the UPTC Legislative Committee for many years; and the parent co-chairperson of the North High School Shared Decision Making Committee. Previously, Rebecca has served on a Selection Committee, chaired two Nominating Committees, co-chaired the JFK Shared Decision Making Committee, and been class parent and PTO board member at the JFK, North Middle, and North High Schools multiple times.
Rebecca’s record of public service is extensive. She is a longstanding officer of SHAI, Sephardic Heritage Alliance, Inc. and previously a co-founder of the Persian Culture Committee. For many years, she has coordinated SHAI’s community educational forums. This spring, Rebecca concludes over a decade as an Officer and Board Member of Temple Israel of Great Neck, and her third year as a Board Member of the Schechter Schools of Long Island. At Schechter, she served on the Collective Bargaining Committee. Rebecca is completing a yearlong fellowship for emerging leaders identified by the Anti Defamation League (ADL) . Rebecca is a member of the Yashar Attorneys and Judges Chapter of Hadassah and a former member of the Nominating Committee of the Great Neck Library.
Professionally, Sassouni is an Attorney at Law in private practice. Rebecca is a member of the Nassau County Bar Association’s Education Law Committee, whereby she presents on emerging case law and attends the Annual School Law Conference of the Nassau and Suffolk Bar Association. Additionally, Sassouni is a New York State Certified Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Facilitator. Rebecca is a 2014 inductee to the Nassau County Women’s Roll of Honor, and twice a Hadassah Woman of Honor recipient.
